The Student Global AIDS Campaign (SGAC) is a student-led organization fighting to end HIV/AIDS.
Why should we join? Because more than 40 million people are destined to die from a preventable disease… and the rates of infection keep escalating. More than 22 million people have already died. More than 14 million children have been orphaned, and every minute 5 people die of AIDS.
But, these are just statistics, cold facts. We have to keep in mind that each single person is someone like YOU. Each individual has a family, friends, a life. These people have to face not only a disease that brings their physical decay and opportunistic illnesses, but also everything that comes along with it. HIV/AIDS, very often, brings shame because of negative connotations. (HIV/AIDS was first prominent among discriminated, marginalized sectors of society). Many of the people that are infected have to face rejection from family and friends, and they must endure this disease by themselves. HIV/AIDS can attack anyone. There are so many faces to this disease: upper middle class mothers, sex workers, homosexuals, youth (the most affected ~50% of infections), hemophiliacs, every imaginable race, you name it…So AIDS is killing many, manyyyy people, and it just seems so insurmountable…but it isn’t because WE CAN END AIDS!!!!
And that’s where SGAC and other AIDS activist organizations come in. We aim to bring an end to HIV/AIDS in the US and around the world through education, informed advocacy, media work, and direct action. There are four main issues in our platform:
a. Fund the Fight: get our government to donate money for HIV/AIDS research.
b. Treat the people: provide treatment for everyone around the world (ex. The Global Fund)
c. Drop the Debt: cancel debt of third world countries so that they can buy medicine for their people and establish HIV prevention programs instead of paying outrageous interests to rich US.
d. Stop the Spread: educate everyone (comprehensive education... include ALL prevention methods)
There are many aspects to each of these four points, many issues we can advocate for!!!
